Needs or Wants?
Ten everyday expenses. Sort each into a need, a want or savings, and see why. A new round arrives every day, and the same round for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a need and a want?
A need is something you can't skip without a real problem, such as housing, basic food, utilities, insurance and minimum debt payments. A want improves life but is optional, such as dining out, streaming and upgrades. Many items have a need version and a want version, like a basic phone plan versus a premium one.
What is the 50/30/20 rule?
A budgeting framework that splits after-tax income into 50% needs, 30% wants and 20% savings or extra debt payoff. It is a starting point, and it fits poorly at very low incomes (where needs exceed 50%) and very high incomes (where 20% savings is too low).
Is this game financial advice?
No. It is an illustrative learning game. Your own budget depends on your income, location and goals.
